The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum Announces Key Appointment Helen Kauder to be Deputy Director

February, 2007

Ridgefield (February 2007). The appointment of Helen Kauder as the new deputy director of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum has been announced by director Harry Philbrick on behalf of the Museum’s Board of Trustees.

Philbrick praised Kauder’s unique qualifications for the job: “The Museum could not be more pleased to welcome Helen, one of Connecticut’s most distinguished arts administrators. Her depth of knowledge as well as her vast experience at Artspace and elsewhere makes her the ideal selection to help lead the Museum over the coming years.” Kauder will join The Aldrich full-time in July 2007.

Over the last ten years, Helen Kauder built Artspace into New Haven’s premier contemporary arts venue and hub for local artists. She oversaw the redevelopment of a Civil War-era furniture factory into Artspace’s new headquarters, in partnership with the City of New Haven’s Office of Economic Development. She has also been the producer of the annual City-Wide Open Studios, a month-long visual arts festival serving emerging artists in Connecticut.

Before assuming the newly-created position of executive director, she served as Artspace's treasurer, and later Board chair.  She also served on the City of New Haven's Cultural Affairs Commission and is the recipient of the Greater New Haven Arts Council's Opening Doors and Building Bridges award, Yale’s Elm-Ivy award (the University's highest honor for Town-Gown improvements), and Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism’s 2003 Distinguished Advocates of the Arts award.

Before joining Artspace, Kauder held senior positions in investment banking and business development at Citicorp and Yale University. She holds a BS from MIT and an MBA from University of Chicago, and resides in New Haven.

Kauder adds, “Over the last several years, I have had the privilege of getting to know, and collaborate with, Harry and the Aldrich staff and am filled with admiration for their work.  I am truly excited to have the opportunity to contribute to the Museum's next chapter and help expand its impact on the contemporary arts field.”

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is renowned as a national leader for its presentation of outstanding new art, cultivation of emerging artists, and innovation in museum education.  Regular Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm.  For more information, please call 203.438.4519 or visit www.aldrichart.org.
